United Way Australia Working Bees

We are currently planning a number of working bees to be coordinated by United Way Australia and our Corporate Partners at our community group homes. Forsight community group homes stand out in the community because they blend in with their neighbours and compete for the best gardens.

We could not achieve this outcome without United Way Australia’s support for which we are very grateful. More on this in the second half of 2011.

Deafblind Awareness Week - 2011

We will be celebrating Helen Keller's birthday in 2011 with a Musical Evening and Dinner to be held at Forsight's Group Home Support Centre in North Rocks on Saturday 2nd July 2011. The theme of the evening will be "Mama Mia" so there will be lots of dancing and ABBA music. Prizes will be awarded for the most outstanding performers among residents and staff.

Kitchen Make Over for Camellia Group Home

Residents at Camellia group home are thrilled with their new kitchen. A new stove top and oven, dishwasher and new cupboards plus tiled floor have made the kitchen unrecognisable. What an amazing difference. What a difference a donation makes! Image of Camillia Group Home new kitchen.

Special Indoor WheelChairs

Royal Freemason’s Benevolent Institute has donated 5 plastic wheelchairs for the Hands-On Cooking project. If the budding Cooks happen to get covered in flour it won't matter - it will be fun with lots of laughter.
These new wheelchairs will signal to our deafblind adults that cooking classes are about to commence! Delicious flavours, aromas and textures will all be experienced, including the opportunity to eat the end result for afternoon tea or dinner.

Easter Bonnet Parade - 2011

Amanda is pictured here with direct care worker Colleen on her way to the SEE oundation's Easter Bonnet Parade. All Forsight's residents dressed up for this event and had a great time. When Amanda arrived home she was surprised to find that lots of Easter eggs had been delivered to her group home.

Genworth Hands-On Sensory Cooking Project

This latest project funded by Genworth Financial is one of the most exciting we have received funding for. Two group home kitchens will be upgraded to make them fully wheelchair accessible for deafblind adults to participate in cooking classes using the senses of touch, aroma and taste. Hands-on will get a new meaning - getting involved in kneading bread and pastry on a floured board will be just one of the hands-on experiences we will offer.

Christmas Gift Giving...

We have put together a few pictures of our 2010 Christmas gift giving party, which was kindly sponsored by Genworth Financial Team. Take a look.

A Visit to Muru Mittigar

On 1st March 2011 five members of District 9680 Rotary Group Study Exchange (GSE) team from Texas and Oklahoma in the United States visited us. Our Forsight bus was used to take the team on a day trip to the Muru Mittigar Aboriginal Cultural and Educational Centre in Penrith New South Wales, Australia. Rotarian from Carlingford Club, Gary Hayman was our driver. At Muru Mittigar the team learned how to play the didgeridoo and to throw a boomerang so that it came back, then enjoyed a typical Aussie lunch.   Thank you to all at Muru Mittigar, everyone had a great time there.

The following day GSE Team Member Brad spent a vocational visit with Larry West Pest Services. Brad enjoyed comparing notes with Larry about his Pest Services Company in Oklahoma. We have posted a few snap shots of their visit HERE!

Pines Group Home Working Bee

December 2010 was a busy time for those of us at the Pines Group Home make over. I would like to say a big thank you to all those who helped make this a very successful day. Many thanks to United Way Australia and Nicholas Rainey and his team of volunteers from the Commonwealth Bank, Marrickville Branch.

Here are a few photographs, showing all the action on the day.

Our Fancy Dress Disco was a huge success!

Thank you to the staff members who supported our resident’s participation in this event. Fun was had by all when Residents and staff all dressed up to a “Rock n Roll” theme and enjoyed dancing to good music followed by a scrumptious supper during “Don't DIS my Ability Week” in December 2010.

This party was advertised on the ADHC website and was so well attended and popular that we are going to hold it again next year to celebrate Disability Week. See a couple of pictures from our party held on the 2nd December 2010.
